Beyond GAME-ER: Historical Pathways of Video Game Production in Europe
We are pleased to invite you to the third webinar of the GAME-ER Project, titled “Beyond GAME-ER: Historical Pathways of Video Game Production in Europe”. This session will explore the historical foundations of European video game production, offering a broader perspective on how today’s game development ecosystems emerged.
While contemporary discussions often focus on established industry clusters, this webinar will turn the spotlight toward the earlier stages of video game production, when the industry was still fragmented and evolving across different national contexts. By examining these formative periods, the event will shed light on how pioneers, early studios, institutional frameworks, and cultural environments contributed to shaping the video game industries we know today.
Building on insights from the GAME-ER project, the webinar will first introduce the project’s research on current European gaming clusters. The discussion will then expand beyond the project’s case studies, featuring international game historians who will present long-term historical trajectories of video game development in other European countries.
Through these perspectives, the webinar will provide a deeper historical lens on the development of regional game ecosystems, helping us better understand how early experimentation, entrepreneurial initiatives, and policy environments laid the groundwork for the cluster formations visible across Europe today.
